Latifpura - reliving the partition

Residents of Latif pura have been first made homeless and have now been told to shift to some old flats which are already in a dilapidated condition.<br /><br />Nearly 50 houses were razed to ground here on December 9 by JIT with support of a heavy police force. But now people of these houses, including around 100 children, have been staying at the same site since then.<br /><br />At the direction of the Punjab government, the district administration had offered to shift them to flats on the Bibi Bhani Complex, but they refused to go. Some organisations have put up tents for these families, who are forced to sleep under the open sky in winter.<br /><br />They alleged that JIT in collusion with the land mafia got their houses demolished without taking them into confidence and got them shifted to safe places.<br /><br />They alleged that the government’s heart was not in the right place. They also demanded that strict action should be taken against Jalandhar Deputy Commissioner of Police who had allegedly used abusive language against them on the day of the demolition.<br /><br />Several farmers’ unions and mazdoor unions came out in their support.

Bagi Munda is a Hip-Hop/Rap artist in Chandigarh. He and his friends have been performing in the streets of Chandigarh since 2012. A genre of music that originated in New York in the seventies, consists of rhythmic music accompanied by rap verse. The young rap artists of Chandigarh talk about their matters of heart and skirmishes with the Police. 45 ਸਾਲਾਂ ਦੇ ਖੇਤ ਮਜ਼ਦੂਰ ਮਹਿੰਦਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਪਿਛਲੇ ਸਾਲ ਕਰਜ਼ੇ ਤੋਂ ਤੰਗ ਆ ਕੇ ਫਾਹਾ ਲੈ ਲਿਆ। ਉਹ ਤਲਵੰਡੀ ਸਾਬੋ ਦੇ ਪਿੰਡ ਜਗਾ ਰਾਮ ਤੀਰਥ ਦਾ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲ਼ੇ ਸਨ। ਮਹਿੰਦਰ ਸੀਰੀ ਵਜੋਂ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦੇ ਸਨ ਅਤੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਸਿਰ ਕਾਫ਼ੀ ਕਰਜ਼ਾ ਸੀ। ਮਹਿੰਦਰ ਦੇ ਮਾਤਾ ਜੀ ਬੀਮਾਰ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਸਨ ਜਿਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਇਲਾਜ ਚ ਹੋਏ ਖ਼ਰਚੇ ਨੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕਰਜ਼ੇ ਦੀ ਪੰਡ ਹੇਠ ਦੱਬ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਜਿਸ ਕਾਰਨ ਉਹ ਖੁਦਕੁਸ਼ੀ ਵੱਲ ਧੱਕੇ ਗਏ। ਮਹਿੰਦਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਦੇ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਦੇ ਮੁਤਾਬਕ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਸ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਇਸ ਵਾਰ ਨਰਮੇ ਦੀ ਚੁਗਾਈ ਕਰਕੇ ਥੋੜਾ ਬਹੁਤ ਕਰਜ਼ਾ ਉਤਾਰ ਦੇਣ ਗੇ ਪਰ ਨਰਮੇ ਦੀ ਫਸਲ ਖਰਾਬ ਹੋਣ ਕਾਰਨ ਇਹ ਆਸ ਵੀ ਖਤਮ ਹੋ ਗਈ, ਜਿਸ ਕਰਕੇ ਉਹ ਪਰੇਸ਼ਾਨ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਸਨ। <br /><br />ਮਹਿੰਦਰ ਹੋਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਦੀ ਆਰਥਿਕ ਹਾਲਤ ਖਸਤਾ ਹੈ। ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਦੋ ਧੀਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਇੱਕ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਹਨ। ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਭਵਿੱਖ ਧੁੰਦਲਾ ਜਾਪ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ। ਮਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਧੀਆਂ ਵਿਆਹੁਣ ਅਤੇ ਪੁੱਤ ਨੂੰ ਕਿੱਤੇ ਲਾਉਣ ਦੀ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਸਭ ਦੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਘਰ ਦੀ ਕੱਚੀ ਛੱਤ ਵੀ ਮੀਂਹ ਪੈਣ ਵੇਲ਼ੇ ਡਰਾਉਦੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ। ਘਰ ਦੀਆਂ ਕੱਚੀਆਂ ਕੰਧਾਂ ਢਹਿ ਚੁੱਕੀਆਂ ਹਨ। ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਜਗ੍ਹਾਂ ਪੱਕੀਆਂ ਕੰਧਾਂ ਦਾ ਨਿਰਮਾਣ ਰਿਸ਼ਤੇਦਾਰ ਕਰਵਾ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ। ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਪਿੰਡ ਤੋਂ ਅਤੇ ਵਿਧਾਇਕ ਬਲਜਿੰਦਰ ਕੌਰ ਨਾਲ਼ ਨਾਰਾਜ਼ਗੀ ਹੈ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਹਨਾ ਨੇ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਦੀ ਕੋਈ ਸਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਲਈ ਅਤੇ ਨਾ ਕੋਈ ਮਦਦ ਕੀਤੀ। ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਦਾ ਕਹਿਣਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਲੀਡਰ ਫੋਟੋਆਂ ਖਿਚਵਾ ਕੇ ਵਾਪਸ ਚਲੇ ਗਏ ਪਰ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੇ ਕੋਈ ਮਦਦ ਨਹੀ ਕੀਤੀ।<br /><br />Mahinder Singh (45) hanged himself due to indebtedness. He was from village Jaga Ram Tirath of Talwandi Sabo (Dist. Bathinda). Mahinder worked as a farm labourer. His mother was ailing and cost for her medical treatment forced him into debt trap. According to his family, he was hoping that the additional income from cotton picking may reduce his debt burden, but as the cotton crop failed, his hopes diminished as well. He started staying worrisome. Ultimately he committed suicide. <br /><br />The family is facing a tough economic situation. They have two daughters and a son. Mother is worried about getting her daughters married and get her son employed. Over this, the dilapidated roof of the house adds to their troubles whenever it rains. The walls of the house have fallen down already. Their relatives are helping them in constructing the walls. Family is not happy with MLA Baljinder Kaur, since she has not shown concern for the family. The family states politicians arrive to get their pictures taken, but no one has helped them

ਕਰੋਰਾਂ ਟਾਡਾਂ ਚੰਡੀਗੜ੍ਹ ਤੋਂ 10 ਕਿੱਲੋਮੀਟਰ ਦੂਰ ਵਸਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ| ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਪਿੰਡ ਭਾਵੇਂ ਚੰਡੀਗੜ੍ਹ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਹੈ ਪਰ ਤਰੱਕੀ ਦੇ ਮਾਮਲੇ ਵਿੱਚ 70 ਸਾਲ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਹੈ। ਇੱਥੇ ਪਹੁੰਚਣ ਲਈ 5 ਬਰਸਾਤੀ ਨਦੀਆਂ ਪਾਰ ਕਰਨੀਆਂ ਪੈਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਇੱਕ ਉੱਤੇ ਵੀ ਪੁਲ਼ ਨਹੀ ਹੈ। ਜਦੋਂ ਵੀ ਬਰਸਾਤ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਨਦੀਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੜ੍ਹ ਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਪਿੰਡ ਵਾਸੀ ਜੇ ਪਿੰਡ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਹਰ ਹਨ ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਉੱਥੇ ਫਸ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਜੇ ਪਿੰਡ ਵਿੱਚ ਹਨ ਤਾ ਪਿੰਡ ਦੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੀ ਰਹਿ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਇਸ ਸਾਲ 7 ਦੇ ਕਰੀਬ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਨਦੀ ਪਾਰ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਕੋਸ਼ਿਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਮਾਰੇ ਗਏ। ਇਹਨਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਿੰਡ ਦਾ ਇੱਕ ਜੋੜਾ ਵੀ ਸ਼ਾਮਿਲ ਹੈ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਦੋ ਬੱਚੇ ਹੁਣ ਅਨਾਥ ਹੋ ਗਏ ਹਨ। ਪਿੰਡ ਦਾ ਸਕੂਲ ਵੀ ਦੋ ਨਦੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਵਿਚਕਾਰ ਹੈ। ਜਦੋਂ ਵੀ ਬਰਸਾਤ ਆਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਸਕੂਲ ਦੇ ਅਧਿਆਪਕ ਬਾਹਰ ਫਸ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਜੇ ਸਕੂਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਹਨ ਤਾਂ ਸਕੂਲ ਤੋਂ ਨਹੀ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੇ। <br /><br />The village Kroran Tanda is just 10 kilometres away from Chandigarh. It is so close to the capital city, yet it lacks basic facilities। One has to cross 5 seasonal rivers to reach here, and there is no bridge on any of them. Whenever it rains the rivers get flooded, and the village residents get stuck if they are away from the village or remain cut off from the outside world if they are in the village. In this year, 7 village residents lost their lives during the rainy season. Two of them were a couple from Tanda and their children are orphans now. The village school is in between two rivers, and whenever it rains, teachers can’t reach the school. If they are in school, they get stranded there.

ਦੇਸੀ ਕਪਾਹ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੀ ਕਦੀਮੀ ਫਸਲ ਹੈ। ਅੰਗਰੇਜਾਂ ਦੇ ਆਉਣ ਬਾਅਦ ਇਥੇ ਨਰਮਾ ਲੱਗਣ ਲੱਗਿਆ। ਮੌਜੂਦਾ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਬਠਿੰਡਾ, ਮੁਕਤਸਰ, ਫਾਜ਼ਿਲਕਾ, ਮਾਨਸਾ ਜ਼ਿਲ੍ਹਿਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਨਰਮੇ ਦੀ ਕਾਸ਼ਤ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ। ਹਰੀ ਕ੍ਰਾਂਤੀ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਕਪਾਹ-ਨਰਮੇ ਦੀ ਫਸਲ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਖਿੱਤੇ ਦੀ ਖੇਤੀ ਲਾਹੇਵੰਦ ਬਣਾਈ। ਪਰ ਹੌਲੀ ਹੌਲੀ ਅਮਰੀਕਨ ਸੁੰਡੀ ਦੀ ਮਾਰ ਕਾਰਨ ਇਥੇ ਫਸਲ ਦੇ ਝਾੜ ਘਟਣ ਲੱਗੇ। 2002 ਵਿਚ ਬੀਟੀ ਨਰਮਾ ਲੱਗਣਾ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਹੋਇਆ, ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਬੀਜ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਸੁੰਡੀ ਮਾਰੂ ਜ਼ਹਿਰ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ। ਪਰ ਇਹ ਬੀਜ ਕਿਸਾਨ ਆਪ ਨਹੀਂ ਤਿਆਰ ਕਰ ਸਕਦੇ ਅਤੇ ਹਰ ਸਾਲ ਮੰਡੀ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਖਰੀਦਣੇ ਪੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਬੀਟੀ ਨਰਮੇ ਨਾਲ਼ ਕੁਝ ਸਾਲ ਤਾਂ ਸੌਖ ਰਹੀ ਪਰ ਫਿਰ ਬੀਟੀ ਨਰਮਾ ਵੀ ਸੁੰਡੀ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਿਕਾਰ ਹੋਣ ਲੱਗਾ। ਹੌਲੀ ਹੌਲੀ ਮੰਡੀ ਵਿਚ ਨਕਲੀ ਬੀਜਾਂ ਦੀ ਵੀ ਭਰਮਾਰ ਹੋ ਗਈ। <br /><br />ਇਸ ਸਾਲ ਨਰਮੇ ਦੀ ਫਸਲ ਲਗਾਤਾਰ ਦੂਜੇ ਸਾਲ ਸੁੰਡੀ ਦਾ ਹਮਲਾ ਸਹਿ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ। ਪਿਛਲੇ ਸਾਲ ਗੁਲਾਬੀ ਸੁੰਡੀ ਨੇ ਨਰਮਾ ਪੱਟੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਨਰਮੇ ਦੀ ਫਸਲ ਨੂੰ ਬਰਬਾਦ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ, ਜਿਸ ਕਰਕੇ ਕਿਸਾਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਖੜ੍ਹੀ ਫਸਲ ਵਾਹੁਣੀ ਪਈ ਸੀ। ਪਿਛਲੇ ਦੋ ਸਾਲਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਲਗਾਤਾਰ ਘਾਟਾ ਸਹਿਣਾ ਪੈ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ। <br /><br />ਨਰਮੇ ਦੀ ਫਸਲ ਦੇ ਨਾਕਾਮ ਹੋਣ ਕਾਰਨ ਕਿਸਾਨ ਇਸ ਦੀ ਥਾਂ ਤੇ ਝੋਨਾ ਬੀਜ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ। ਜਿਸਦੇ ਨਾਲ਼ ਪਾਣੀ ਦਾ ਪੱਧਰ ਨੀਵਾਂ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੀ ਇਹ ਫਸਲ ਨਰਮਾ ਪੱਟੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੀ ਜਗ੍ਹਾ ਬਣਾ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ, ਜਿੱਥੇ ਪਾਣੀ ਦੀ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਹੀ ਘਾਟ ਹੈ। ਨਰਮੇ ਦੀ ਫਸਲ ਤੇ ਖੇਤ ਮਜ਼ਦੂਰ ਵੀ ਨਿਰਭਰ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਨਰਮਾ ਹੱਥੀਂ ਚੁਗਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਪਰ ਝੋਨੇ ਦੀ ਫਸਲ ਕੰਬਾਈਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ਼ ਵੱਡੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਬਚੀ ਖੁਚੀ ਪਰਾਲੀ ਸਾੜ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ। ਜਿਸ ਕਾਰਨ ਨਾ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਪੌਣ ਪਾਣੀ ਖਰਾਬ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਬਲਕਿ ਪੇਂਡੂ ਕਿਰਤੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਰੁਜ਼ਗਾਰ ਦੇ ਹੋਰ ਵਸੀਲੇ ਲੱਭਣੇ ਪੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ।<br /><br />ਕਿਸਾਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਮੰਗ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਨਵੇਂ ਬੀਜ ਲਿਆਵੇ ਅਤੇ ਨਕਲੀ ਬੀਜਾਂ ਦੀ ਵਿਕਰੀ ਤੇ ਪਾਬੰਦੀ ਲਾਈ ਜਾਵੇ। <br /><br />Indigenous cotton is one of Punjab’s ancient crops. The British introduced a new variety of cotton, which was named Narma (softer cotton). The Bathinda, Muktsar, Fazilka, and Mansa districts of East Panjab are called Narma or Cotton Belt. After the green revolution cotton crop made farming sustainable in this region. But slowly the American Cotton Bollworm started to cause damage to crops. In 2002 BT Cotton was introduced, whose seeds contain toxicity to counter pest attacks. But farmers can’t farm these seeds themselves, they have to buy new seeds from the market every year. BT Cotton brought some relief to farmers in the Cotton belt, but these crops started getting damaged by bollworm attacks too. The sale of fake seeds in the market added to the farmers’ woes. <br /><br />This year, the cotton crop is experiencing an attack by the bollworm in the second year as well. Last year Pink Bollworm attack on cotton crops forced farmers to plough their crops. The farmers in the cotton belt are facing losses for the second year<br /><br />As the cotton crop has failed, farmers have started sowing paddy in its place. Due to this water-guzzling paddy crop is making its way in the cotton belt as well. The groundwater level and quality are already poor in this region. Agri labourers are also dependent on cotton crops as the cotton is to be picked by hand. Whereas paddy is harvested with a combine harvester and its stubble is burnt. This results not only in deterioration of water and air but the rural labourers have to find work elsewhere as well.<br /><br />The farmers want the government to introduce new seeds and prohibit the sale of fake seeds.

A protest by Ambedkar Student association(ASA), a student body, has entered 21st day outside VC office, Panjab University Chandigarh. <br /><br />ASA members have three main demands from the university.<br /><br />First demand: PU administration should release degrees of Dalit Bahujan students who were covered under Post Matric Scholarship scheme. PU is not releasing degrees citing non-payment of scholarship money by state government while students are claiming that payment of scholarship issue should be sorted by the university and administration. Students should not be made to suffer due to the administrative issues.<br /><br />Second demand: Dalit Bahujan students from Haryana should be admitted in university without paying any fees. University administration is not implementing Post Matric Scholarship scheme while Haryana government is ready to pay fees for Dalit Bahujan students.<br /><br />Third demand: Reservation in hostel allotment should be implemented properly and seats that were provided to Dalit Bahujan students in SC/ST hostel should be adjusted in other hostels. University administration have not found a solution for the issue and told Dalit Bahujan students to move their protest from outside VC office to designated protest site.

ਜ਼ੀਰੇ ਨੇੜਲੇ ਪਿੰਡ ਮਨਸੂਰਵਾਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਸ਼ਰਾਬ ਦੀ ਫ਼ੈਕਟਰੀ ਦੇ ਖ਼ਿਲਾਫ਼ ਆਸ-ਪਾਸ ਦੇ ਪਿੰਡ ਵਾਸੀਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਕਿਸਾਨ ਜਥੇਬੰਦੀਆਂ ਨੇ 24 ਜੁਲਾਈ 2022 ਤੋਂ ਧਰਨਾ ਲਗਾਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ। ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦਾ ਇਲਜ਼ਾਮ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਮਾਲਬਰੋਜ ਕੰਪਨੀ ਦੀ ਇਸ ਫੈਕਟਰੀ ਦੀ ਵਜ੍ਹਾ ਨਾਲ਼ ਇਲਾਕੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਧਰਤੀ ਹੇਠਲਾ ਪਾਣੀ ਗੰਧਲ਼ਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਹਵਾ ਖਰਾਬ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਕੰਪਨੀ ਸ਼੍ਰੋਮਣੀ ਅਕਾਲੀ ਦਲ (ਬਾਦਲ) ਵੱਲੋਂ ਫਰੀਦਕੋਟ ਦੇ ਐੱਮਐੱਲਏ ਰਹੇ ਸ਼ਰਾਬ ਕਾਰੋਬਾਰੀ ਦੀਪ ਮਲਹੋਤਰਾ ਦੀ ਹੈ। ਪਿੰਡ ਵਾਸੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਕੰਪਨੀ ਉੱਤੇ ਗੈਰਕਾਨੂੰਨੀ ਮਾਈਨਿੰਗ ਕਰਕੇ ਧਰਤੀ ਹੇਠ ਫ਼ੈਕਟਰੀ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਨਿਕਲੀ ਰਾਖ ਦਬਾਉਣ ਦਾ ਦੋਸ਼ ਲਾਇਆ।<br /><br />5 ਅਗਸਤ 2022 ਨੂੰ ਟ੍ਰਾਲੀ ਟਾਈਮਜ ਦੀ ਟੀਮ, ਰਟੌਲ਼ ਰੋਹੀ ਪਿੰਡ ਦੇ ਵਾਸੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲੀ। ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਫ਼ੈਕਟਰੀ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਪਿੰਡ ਵਾਲ਼ਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੈਂਸਰ, ਮਿਹਦੇ ਅਤੇ ਚਮੜੀ ਦੇ ਰੋਗਾਂ ਦੇ ਫੈਲਣ ਦੀ ਗੱਲ ਕਹੀ। ਇੱਥੋਂ ਤੱਕ ਕਿ ਇਕ ਕਰੀਬੀ ਪਿੰਡ ਦੇ ਖੇਤਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਸ਼ੂਆਂ ਦੇ ਹਰੇ ਚਾਰੇ ਤੇ ਫ਼ੈਕਟਰੀ ਦੀਆਂ ਚਿਮਨੀਆਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਛੱਡੀ ਰਾਖ ਪੈ ਗਈ ਸੀ, ਉਸ ਚਾਰੇ ਨੂੰ ਖਾਣ ਨਾਲ਼ ਪਿੰਡ ਵਿਚ 50 ਦੇ ਕਰੀਬ ਪਸ਼ੂ ਮਾਰੇ ਗਏ ਸਨ। ਜਦੋਂ ਪਿੰਡ ਵਾਸੀਆਂ ਸ਼ਿਕਾਇਤ ਕੀਤੀ ਤਾਂ ਫ਼ੈਕਟਰੀ ਨੇ ਪਸ਼ੂ ਮਾਲਿਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮੁਆਵਜ਼ਾ ਦੇ ਕੇ ਪੱਲਾ ਝਾੜ ਲਿਆ। <br /><br />ਕਾਇਦੇ ਕਾਨੂੰਨਾ ਮੁਤਾਬਿਕ ਸ਼ਰਾਬ ਫੈਕਟਰੀਆਂ ਵਸੋਂ ਤੋਂ ਕਾਫੀ ਦੂਰ ਲੱਗਣੀਆਂ ਚਾਹੀਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ। ਫ਼ੈਕਟਰੀ ਤੋਂ ਇੱਕ ਕਿੱਲੋਮੀਟਰ ਦੀ ਦੂਰੀ ਤੇ ਸਕੂਲ ਹੈ, ਅਧਿਆਪਕਾਂ ਦਾ ਕਹਿਣਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਸਕੂਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਹਵਾ ਨਾਲ ਫ਼ੈਕਟਰੀ ਦੀ ਰਾਖ ਆ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਪੀਣ ਲਈ ਪਾਣੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਘਰੋਂ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਆਉਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਇਕ ਅਧਿਆਪਕ ਤਾਂ ਫ਼ੈਕਟਰੀ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਦੂਸ਼ਣ ਕਾਰਨ ਬਦਲੀ ਕਰਵਾ ਕੇ ਦੂਸਰੇ ਸਕੂਲ ਚਲਾ ਗਿਆ। ਫ਼ੈਕਟਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਸ਼ਾਸ਼ਨ ਕਹਿ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਕਾਨੂੰਨ ਮੁਤਾਬਕ ਚੱਲ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ।<br /><br />In village Mansurwal (Distt. Ferozepur) of Punjab, farmer unions and locals have been protesting a liquor factory since 24 July 2022. People are accusing the factory by Malbros International Private Limited of polluting the ground water and air in the area. This factory is owned by liquor businessman and politician Deep Malhotra(Ex MLA Faridkot) of Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal). Villages accused the company of illegal mining and dumping the ashen waste underground. <br /><br />The Trolley Times team visited the village Ratol Rohi on 5 August 2022. It is closest to the factory and bears the most brunt. We met villagers who complained of a rising number of cancer, and liver and skin diseases. The ash emitted by factories falls on animal fodder, which has resulted in the death of more than 50 buffaloes and cows. When the villagers complained, the factory paid off a meagre compensation to save their skin.<br /><br />Legally, liquor factories should be established at significant distances from the population. But Government School Ratol Rohi is almost one kilometre away from the factory. The teachers said that ash from the factory falls on the school premises too. They have to bring clean drinking water from their home. One teacher got himself transferred to another school due to the air and water pollution caused by the factory. The factory administration claims they are following all the legal compliances.

More than 500 cows in Punjab have died due to an outbreak of lumpy skin disease according to official reports. The authorities have not produced exact figures, but the virus has infected an estimated 27,000 cows in Punjab alone.<br /><br />We travelled to Ghanaur Khurd, District Sangrur, where nearly 50 animals have died from lumpy skin disease in the village. In a Dainik Jagran news report, the official figure of dead cows is 16 in the Fazilka district, whereas the dairy farmers claimed that around 600 cows have died in their village cluster alone.<br /><br />We contacted the government and private veterinarians in Punjab, but they refused to talk on camera stating that the government would not like what they have to say about the extent of the disease outbreak.<br /><br />ਸਰਕਾਰੀ ਅੰਕੜਿਆਂ ਮੁਤਾਬਿਕ ਲੰਪੀ ਸਕਿਨ ਬਿਮਾਰੀ ਕਾਰਨ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਵਿਚ 500 ਗਾਵਾਂ ਮਰ ਚੁੱਕੀਆਂ ਹਨ। ਹਾਲਾਂਕਿ ਅੰਕੜੇ ਸਟੀਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਨ, ਪਰ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਅੰਦਾਜ਼ਨ 27, 000 ਗਾਵਾਂ ਇਸ ਬਿਮਾਰੀ ਦੀਆਂ ਸ਼ਿਕਾਰ ਹੋ ਚੁਕੀਆਂ ਹਨ।<br /><br />ਅਸੀਂ ਸੰਗਰੂਰ ਜ਼ਿਲੇ ਦੇ ਘਨੌਰ ਖੁਰਦ ਗਏ, ਜਿੱਥੇ ਸਿਰਫ ਪਿੰਡ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਇਸ ਬਿਮਾਰੀ ਕਾਰਨ 50 ਦੇ ਕਰੀਬ ਪਸ਼ੂ ਮਰ ਚੁੱਕੇ ਹਨ। ਦੈਨਿਕ ਜਾਗਰਣ ਦੀ ਇਕ ਖ਼ਬਰ ਵਿਚ ਫ਼ਾਜਿਲਕਾ ਜ਼ਿਲੇ ਦੇ ਸਰਕਾਰੀ ਅੰਕੜੇ 16 ਗਾਵਾਂ ਮਰੀਆਂ ਦੱਸ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ, ਜਦਕਿ ਪਸ਼ੂ ਪਾਲਕਾਂ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਡੇਰਿਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ 600 ਦੇ ਨੇੜੇ ਪਸ਼ੂ ਮਰ ਚੁੱਕੇ ਹਨ। <br /><br />ਅਸੀਂ ਸਰਕਾਰੀ ਅਤੇ ਨਿੱਜੀ ਡੰਗਰ ਡਾਕਟਰਾਂ ਨਾਲ਼ ਗੱਲ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਕੋਸ਼ਿਸ਼ ਕੀਤੀ, ਪਰ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਕੈਮਰੇ ਤੇ ਕੁਝ ਵੀ ਕਹਿਣ ਤੋਂ ਮਨਾ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਮੁਤਾਬਿਕ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਬਿਮਾਰੀ ਦੀ ਸਹੀ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਦੇਣ ਨਾਲ਼ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਲਾਲ ਪੀਲੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਵੇਗੀ।

The groundwater in Abohar region of Fazilka district has always been brackish, with high fluoride content. It is unfit for farming and drinking. People of the region are heavily dependent on water from Rajasthan feeder canal that originates from Harike confluence of Satluj- Beas rivers. Due to water pollution of Buddha Naala and hence Satluj and canal waters, the people of villages around Abohar are suffering damages to their crops, and there is a rise in the number of cancer patients. In Dharang wala itself, there are around 40 disabled children. ਅਬੋਹਰ ਇਲਾਕੇ ਦਾ ਧਰਤੀ ਹੇਠਲਾ ਪਾਣੀ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਖਾਰਾ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਪੀਣ ਦੇ ਅਤੇ ਸਿੰਜਾਈ ਦੇ ਕਾਬਿਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ। ਇਲਾਕੇ ਦੇ ਲੋਕ ਨਹਿਰੀ ਪਾਣੀ ਉੱਤੇ ਨਿਰਭਰ ਹਨ, ਜਿਹੜਾ ਹਰੀਕੇ ਪੱਤਣ ਕੋਲੋਂ ਨਿਕਲਦੀਆਂ ਨਹਿਰਾਂ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਇਸ ਇਲਾਕੇ ਤੱਕ ਪਹੁੰਚਦਾ ਹੈ। ਬੁੱਢੇ ਨਾਲ਼ੇ ਦਾ ਗੰਦਾ ਪਾਣੀ, ਸਤਲੁਜ ਚ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਅੱਗੋਂ ਨਹਿਰਾਂ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਇਥੇ ਆ ਪਹੁੰਚਦਾ ਹੈ। ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ਼ ਇਸ ਇਲਾਕੇ ਦੀਆਂ ਫਸਲਾਂ ਖਰਾਬ ਹੋ ਰਹੀਆਂ ਹਨ, ਬਾਗ਼ ਸੁੱਕ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ, ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਚਮੜੀ ਰੋਗ, ਜੋੜਾਂ ਦੇ ਰੋਗ ਅਤੇ ਕੈਂਸਰ ਵਰਗੀਆਂ ਬਿਮਾਰੀਆਂ ਹੋ ਰਹੀਆਂ ਹਨ। ਸਿਰਫ ਧਾਰੰਗ ਵਾਲਾ ਪਿੰਡ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ 40 ਮੰਦਬੱਧੀ ਬੱਚੇ ਹਨ।

When the village panchayat of Sekhowal was made to sell land to GLADA, Kashmir Singh was the only person who stood against power and police to oppose the deal. When the Police took the village sarpanch in their car to get the land deal signed, he called journalists and reached Tehsil complex, where they protested. In 2021, Punjab Police trampled the cattle fodder they had grown but he insisted that villagers should sow crops without fearing government and police. Since the protest against the Mattewara project started, he has been at the forefront. He said how in the Mid-1960s, When India was facing food shortage, PM Lal Bahadur Shastri gave a call to farmers to make use of the vacant land and grow more food. At that time, residents of present day Sekhowal village worked on this vacant land and made it cultivable. Nearly all of the residents of Sekhowal village are Dalits and they were about to become landowners. But in 1970 a government owned potato seed farm took over their land forcibly. Resourceless Dalits of Sekhowal village fought a tough legal battle that took nearly 30 years for them to win back the right to cultivate land. Village Panchayat got land ownership in 2014. The Punjab government tried to set up a Textile Industry Park on more than 400 acres by acquiring the same land but had to step back because of protests. ਕਸ਼ਮੀਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਦੱਸ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਜੇ ਮੱਤੇਵਾੜਾ ਟੈਕਸਟਾਈਲ ਇੰਡਸਟਰੀ ਪਾਰਕ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਤਾਂ ਇਸ ਦਾ ਉੱਥੋਂ ਦੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਪੌਣ ਪਾਣੀ ਉੱਤੇ ਕੀ ਅਸਰ ਹੋਣਾ ਸੀ।ਜਦੋਂ ਸੇਖੋਵਾਲ ਦੀ ਪੰਚਾਇਤ ਨੂੰ ਪਿੰਡ ਦੀ ਜ਼ਮੀਨ ਵੇਚਣ ਲਈ ਮਜ਼ਬੂਰ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਤਾਂ ਕਸ਼ਮੀਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਇਕੱਲਾ ਬੰਦਾ ਸੀ ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਅਤੇ ਹਕੂਮਤੀ ਦਾਬੇ ਦੇ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਖੜਾ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਇਸ ਸੌਦੇ ਦਾ ਵਿਰੋਧ ਕੀਤਾ। ਜਦੋਂ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਸੌਦੇ ਤੇ ਦਸਤਖਤ ਕਰਵਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਸਰਪੰਚ ਨੂੰ ਕਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਬਿਠਾ ਕੇ ਲੈ ਗਈ। ਉਸ ਨੇ ਪਤਰਕਾਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਖਬਰ ਕੀਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਪਿੰਡ ਵਾਸੀ ਇਕੱਠੇ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਤਹਿਸੀਲ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਰੋਧ ਦਰਜ ਕਰਵਾਇਆ। 2021 ਵਿਚ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਨੇ ਪਿੰਡ ਵਾਸੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਬੀਜਿਆ ਚਾਰਾ ਵਾਹ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਪਿੰਡ ਵਾਸੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਫਸਲਾਂ ਬੀਜਦੇ ਰਹਿਣ ਦੀ ਹੱਲਾਸ਼ੇਰੀ ਦਿੱਤੀ। ਮੱਤੇਵਾੜਾ ਸੰਘਰਸ਼ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਹੋਣ ਤੋਂ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਹੁਣ ਤੱਕ ਉਹ ਮੂਹਰਲੀ ਕਤਾਰਾ ਵਿਚ ਰਿਹ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਦਸਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ 1960ਵਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਜਦੋਂ ਭਾਰਤ ਭੋਜਨ ਦੀ ਤੰਗੀ ਨਾਲ਼ ਜੂਝ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ, ਵੇਲ਼ੇ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨ ਮੰਤਰੀ ਲਾਲ ਬਹਾਦਰ ਸ਼ਾਸਤਰੀ ਨੇ ਕਿਸਾਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਬੇਅਬਾਦ ਜ਼ਮੀਨਾਂ ਵਾਹ ਕੇ ਹੋਰ ਅੰਨ ਉਪਜਾਉਣ ਦਾ ਸੱਦਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ। ਉਹਨਾਂ ਵੇਲ਼ਿਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਅਜੋਕੇ ਸੇਖੋਵਾਲ ਪਿੰਡ ਦੇ ਵਾਸੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਬੇਅਬਾਦ ਜ਼ਮੀਨ ਨੂੰ ਵਾਹੀਯੋਗ ਬਣਾਇਆ। ਸੇਖੋਵਾਲ ਦੇ ਬਹੁਤੇ ਵਾਸੀ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਬੇਜ਼ਮੀਨੇ ਦਲਿਤ ਭਾਈਚਾਰੇ ਤੋਂ ਸਨ ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਜ਼ਮੀਨ ਦੇ ਮਾਲਿਕ ਬਣਨ ਹੀ ਵਾਲ਼ੇ ਸਨ ਕਿ 1970 ਵਿੱਚ ਇੱਥੇ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਨੇ ਸੀਡ ਫ਼ਾਰਮ ਬਣਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਜ਼ਮੀਨ ਹਥਿਆ ਲਈ! ਸੇਖੋਵਾਲ ਦੇ ਸਾਧਨਵਿਹੂਣੇ ਦਲਿਤ ਪਰਿਵਾਰਾਂ ਨੇ 30 ਸਾਲ ਲੰਮੀ ਕਾਨੂੰਨੀ ਲੜਾਈ ਲੜੀ ਅਤੇ ਜ਼ਮੀਨ ਵਾਹੁਣ ਦਾ ਹੱਕ ਜਿੱਤਿਆ। ਪੰਚਾਇਤ ਨੂੰ ਜ਼ਮੀਨ ਦੀ ਮਾਲਕੀ 2014 ਵਿੱਚ ਮਿਲੀ। ਪੰਜਾਬ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਨੇ ਏਥੇ ਹੀ 400 ਏਕੜ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਧ ਜ਼ਮੀਨ ਐਕੁਆਇਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਟੈਕਸਟਾਈਲ ਇੰਡਸਟਰੀ ਪਾਰਕ ਲਾਉਣਾ ਸੀ, ਪਰ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਜ਼ਬਰਦਸਤ ਵਿਰੋਧ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਫੈਸਲੇ ਤੋਂ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਹਟਣਾ ਪਿਆ।

This is what a Textile industry does to fresh water sources, forest and people who are dependant on them. Walipur is a living exampleSatluj’s water is considered of drinking quality and it is classified as C category by Punjab Pollution Control Board. Buddha Naala meets the Satluj river close to Walipur Kalan village of Punjab’s Ludhiana district. It carries polluted water of Ludhiana’s industry along with it. After the water from Buddha Naala merges with Satluj, it becomes undrinkable and the quality classification is considered E category.The residents of villages along its course bear the brunt of this water pollution. We talked to residents of Walipur Kalan, who are suffering consequences of polluted groundwater. Majority of people in the village are facing health related issues. Some have died due to cancer, others are suffering from Skin, Kidney and Liver diseases. Children as young as 7 years, have grey hair and dental problems. In April 2022, we met Dharampreet, a young man of 27 years. He told us how he became infected with Hepatitis due to water pollution in the village. A fortnight after the interview, in June 2022, he died.A woman mentioned that she also suffered from Hepatitis and her family didn’t want her to take medicine. They wanted to keep it secret. People are scared of the disease and don’t want others to know because it becomes a hurdle in getting their children married. They are landless labourers and can’t afford to get the water filtered at home. Now they have to pay their hard earned income to buy clean drinking water. Most villagers want Buddha Naala to be cleaned. They want a strict ban on release of polluted water by the industry.ਸਤਲੁਜ ਦਰਿਆ ਦਾ ਪਾਣੀ ਪੀਣਯੋਗ ਹੈ, ਪੰਜਾਬ ਪ੍ਰਦੂਸ਼ਣ ਕੰਟਰੋਲ ਬੋਰਡ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਸੀ ਕੈਟੇਗਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਦਰਜਾਬੰਦ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਲੁਧਿਆਣੇ ਜ਼ਿਲੇ ਦੇ ਪਿੰਡ ਵਲੀਪੁਰ ਕਲਾਂ ਨੇੜੇ ਬੁੱਢੇ ਨਾਲ਼ੇ ਦਾ ਪਾਣੀ ਸਤਲੁਜ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ। ਲੁਧਿਆਣੇ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਦੀਆਂ ਫੈਕਟਰੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਸਾਰਾ ਜ਼ਹਿਰੀਲਾ ਗੰਦ ਮੰਦ ਬੁੱਢਾ ਨਾਲ਼ਾ ਢੋਂਹਦਾ ਹੈ। ਜਦੋਂ ਇਹ ਪਾਣੀ ਸਤਲੁਜ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਇਹ ਪੀਣਯੋਗ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ। ਇਸ ਦੀ ਦਰਜਾਬੰਦੀ ਘਟ ਕੇ ਈ ਕੈਟੇਗਰੀ ਰਹਿ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ। ਪਲੀਤ ਪਾਣੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਮਾਰ ਇਸ ਨਾਲ਼ੇ ਦੇ ਕੰਢੇ ਵਸਦੇ ਪਿੰਡ ਸਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਅਸੀਂ ਵਲੀਪੁਰ ਕਲਾਂ ਦੇ ਵਾਸੀਆਂ ਨਾਲ਼ ਗੱਲ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਿਹੜੇ ਧਰਤੀ ਹੇਠਲਾ ਖਰਾਬ ਪਾਣੀ ਪੀਣ ਕਾਰਨ ਬਿਮਾਰੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਿਕਾਰ ਹਨ। ਕੁਝ ਕੈਂਸਰ ਨਾਲ਼ ਮਰ ਵੀ ਚੁੱਕੇ ਹਨ, ਬਹੁਤ ਜਣੇ ਚਮੜੀ, ਗੁਰਦਿਆਂ, ਅਤੇ ਮਿਹਦੇ ਦੀਆਂ ਬਿਮਾਰੀਆਂ ਨਾਲ਼ ਗ੍ਰਸਤ ਹਨ। 6-7 ਸਾਲ ਦੇ ਬੱਚਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਵਾਲ਼ ਚਿੱਟੇ ਹੋ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਦੰਦ ਖਰਾਬ ਹਨ।ਅਪ੍ਰੈਲ 2022 ਵਿਚ ਅਸੀਂ 27 ਸਾਲਾ ਗੱਭਰੂ ਧਰਮਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲੇ। ਉਸ ਨੇ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਕਾਲੇ ਪੀਲੀਏ ਨਾਲ਼ ਹੋਏ ਬੁਰੇ ਹਾਲ ਬਾਰੇ ਦੱਸਿਆ। ਉਸ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਲਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਸਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਭਵਿੱਖ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਿਹਾ। ਇੰਟਰਵਿਊ ਤੋਂ ਡੇਢ ਮਹੀਨਾ ਬਾਅਦ ਉਹ ਚਲਾਣਾ ਕਰ ਗਿਆ। ਇਕ ਔਰਤ ਨੇ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਕਾਲਾ ਪੀਲੀਆ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਚਾਹੁੰਦਾ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਇਸ ਦੀ ਦਵਾਈ ਲਵੇ। ਉਹ ਇਸ ਬਿਮਾਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਪਤ ਰੱਖਣਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਲੋਕ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਰੋਗਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਡਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਚਾਹੁੰਦੇ ਕਿ ਇਸ ਬਾਰੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਪਤਾ ਲੱਗੇ। ਕਿਉਂ ਜੋ ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹੀ ਖਬਰ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਬੱਚਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਵਿਆਹ ਸ਼ਾਦੀ ਕਰਨ ਵਿਚ ਅੜਚਣ ਬਣ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ। ਬਹੁਤੇ ਲੋਕੀਂ ਬੇਜ਼ਮੀਨੇ ਕਿਰਤੀ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਫ਼ਿਲਟਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਲਗਵਾ ਸਕਦੇ। ਉਹ ਆਪਣੀ ਖੂਨ-ਪਸੀਨੇ ਦੀ ਕਮਾਈ ਨਾਲ਼ ਪੀਣਯੋਗ ਪਾਣੀ ਖਰੀਦਣ ਲਈ ਮਜ਼ਬੂਰ ਹਨ। ਪਿੰਡ ਵਾਸੀ ਚਾਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਬੁੱਢੇ ਨਾਲ਼ੇ ਦਾ ਪਾਣੀ ਸਾਫ਼ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਵੇ। ਉਹ ਇਹ ਵੀ ਚਾਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਫੈਕਟਰੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਜ਼ਹਿਰੀਲਾ ਪਾਣੀ ਨਾਲ਼ੇ ਵਿਚ ਛੱਡਣ ‘ਤੇ ਸਖਤ ਪਬੰਦੀ ਲੱਗੇ

In Walipur Kalan ( Dist. Ludhiana, Punjab), the stinking, toxic, dark waters of polluted Buddha Nullah meet the comparatively cleaner waters of Sutlej river.Several villagers are suffering from deadly diseases. It should not be more than 30 mg/l.Entire population in Malwa region of Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan is dependent on Satluj River as a source of drinking water and irrigation. In Punjab, Water Pollution is responsile for hundreds of deaths every year.

According to a report in The Hindustan Times, FCI pays 10 crore as rentto Adani Group for each procurement season to store agricultural produce.This year, 22,000 tonnes of grain has been stored in silos so far, compared to 7,000tonnes during the same period in past years. Due to farmer protest, Last year there was no procurement due to farmer protest.

The historic farmers' movement and the women's role in it has been extraordinary. But it was years of efforts of activists like Paramjit Kaur and the unions. Paramjit Kaur, is Bathinda District Vice President of BKU Ekta Ugrahan. Her husband has been active in farmer unions since 1984. He was even jailed in 1986 for his activism. She started going to protests in 1992. In 2002, when BKU Ugrahan was formed, she joined them along with her family. In 2004, She started speaking on stages. She has been part of all the agitations the unions has fought and has been to jail four times for active participation.She narrates how the farmers' movement 2020-21 has brought political consciousness to the people. “They can guard their rights by organizing and fighting together.” She says. Her union stays clear from supporting electoral politicians. The power politics corrupts all, but people's politics is to unite, fight and win. The corporate capitalism is exploitative of all, be it the laborer, farmer, shopkeeper and the working classes. It only benefits the rich. The drug abuse is a serious problem, but the rulers do not want to eradicate it. They want to use it, to earn profits from it. They lure the youth into drugs and violence. They patronize such youth, so that they can keep ruling with impunity. The drugs and alcohol are a challenge for women. It is on us to organize and fight these social ills. We can't expect rulers to save our youth. The same youth has contributed so well to the farmers movement and showcased the world what they are capable of.We have educated our young boys and girls but they don't get employment, if they fight for their rights, they are beaten up. We have to organize and fight for rights, that's how we can assure our security.

Dr Sakshi has been taking care of farmers on Tikri Border ever since the protest began. Everyday she has been traveling to the protest and spending her day here. In this video, she narrates her experience and how she connected with the cause and decided to join the protest. She talks about the obstacles and conditions at the site. "People like my grandfather are on roads fighting for our future, that inspired me. How could I stay at home, I had to be here, at their service" she says.

Maninder Ladal and his team came to Tikri in the initial days of protest and distributed water bottles to the protesting farmers. But while doing that they realized that bottled water wasn’t going to work as a permanent solution. So they decided to stay and take upon themselves the responsibility of distributing water to all the farmers sitting at Tikri Border covering almost 15 km of the national highway. They did it all from their own pocket and with funding from close friends. Every single day during the last 10 months they have been going around the protest site thrice a day starting at 4 o’clock in the morning till late night. Heroes of farmers protest - Volunteers from Chilla Sahib Sirsa have been serving farmers from day 1. Even hundreds of local labourers eat food here everyday.

Gurjant Singh of village Kishanpur Kuti, Batinda has been at the Tikri protest site since November 26, 2020. He owns 6 acres of land. Both his sons were in the army. One died in an army operation after which the family asked the other son to leave the army. The surviving son remained unemployed for a few years, and joined Punjab Police later. Gurjant Singh is associated with BKU Ekta Ugrahan and has been active in rail roko and other union actions in Punjab. He states the union has a more peaceful and organised approach to fight for the cause.His day starts with nitnem of Gurbani. During the day, he goes to Pakoda chowk and participates in discussions on current affairs about the protest. He listens to the union leaders' speeches. In the evening, he recites rehras. He finds himself at peace at the protest site; it is only the farm laws that disturb him. He is resolute to stay put, and is hopeful that the farm laws will be repealed.

Malkeet Kaur (63) of Phulluwala Dogra, Mansa - A vegetable and dairy farmerShe sold the milk and vegetables on her own. It enable her to provide for the education of her two daughters. Her efforts augmented the family income and they could marry off their daughters without borrowing any money. She inculcated the dairy farming skills into her daughters too. She has spent five out of nine months on the protest sites. The family has been active in the farmer union for three decades now. Her husband was active in the farmer union first. She followed suit later and started going to protests and sit-ins. She is here for the future generations. She states that even the police and army personnel are their own children. No politician sends their children to fight on borders. She is resolute on protesting as long as it takes to reverse the farm laws. "We have always fought those in power. We have stood by the powerless."

Navjot Singh of Jogewala (Moga) is in his thirties and teaches English to high school students at an academy he runs with his teacher friends. During his student years he became politically active and became a member of AISF. In his formative years, when MGNREGA was introduced, he became active in implementing it in and around his village. NREGA unions were formed to ensure that the labourers got the fair wages from the hegemonic setup that runs from the panchayat to district level.As a member of Pragatisheel Manch Punjab, he has been canvassing and mobilising students, farmers and women in the ongoing farmers movement. During the 2020 lockdown, the manch was active in unionising and protecting rural women from debt trap schemes of micro finance companies. In association with Punjab Kisan Union, the manch participates in the SKM calls at the district level, and organises groups from the villages to be sent to the Delhi borders.This video was shot on 17th November 2020, when he and his compatriots commemorated the martyrdom day of Kartar Singh Sarabha, the Ghadar revolutionary, in their village. Balwinder Singh of Sukhpura Maur, Barnala arrived at the Tikri protest site in first week of April 2021. He is phyically challenged and walks with crutches. He has resolved to stay put at the protest site till the black farm laws are repealed. He has been honoured by the SKM for his dedication to the cause.

Soon after farmer protests came to Delhi, on December 1, 2020, Amrik Singh Nijjar, BKU Qadian's district president from Jalandhar, took charge as chief cashier of the Samyukt Kisan Morcha. He has maintained meticulous records of inflow and outgo of funds to the Morcha since the beginning. Panjabi internet channels keep announcing the Parliament speeches by Panjab's mostly Sikh political leaders as 'bombastic', 'fiery' and so on. Though we know all these speeches are now post the Laws, I ended up listening to Badal, Mann, Bittu, et al. Their speeches are capsules of Sikh history. Makes me wonder how long will Sikh leaders need to keep giving these capsules to the Parliament and through it the people of India, even world.It is a straightforward history of resistance to hegemony. The acts have been described as "anti-farmer laws" by farmer unions, while unions opposition politicians also say it would leave farmers at the "mercy of corporates". It became the largest protest ever recorded in human history.Soon after the acts were introduced, unions began holding local protests, mostly in the states of Punjab and Haryana. After two months of protests, farmers—notably from the two aforementioned states—began a movement named 'Dilli Chalo' (transl. Let's go to Delhi), in which tens of thousands of farmers marched towards the national capital. Police and law enforcement used water cannons and tear gas to prevent the farmers from entering Delhi. On 26 November, a nationwide general strike that reportedly involved approximately 250 million people took place in support of the farmers. On 30 November, India Today estimated that between 200,000 and 300,000 farmers were converging at various border points on the way to Delhi."
