ਹੁਣ ਹੁੱਕਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਕੰਮ ਘਟ ਗਿਆ, 47 ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਸੀ| ਅੱਠ ਦੁਕਾਨਾਂ ਸੀ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ, ਹੁਣ ਇੱਕ ਵੀ ਹੈਨੀਂ। 47 ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ 4 ਸਾਲ਼ ਦੁਕਾਨਦਾਰ ਕੋਲ ਬੈਠ ਗਏ, ਉਹਦੇ ਤੋਂ ਇਹ ਕੰਮ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ। ਦਾਦਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਹੋਰ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਸੀ। ਅਸੀਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਬਾਪ ਨਾਲ਼ ਲੱਗੇ ਰਹੇ। ਹੌਲੀ ਹੌਲੀ ਸਿੱਖ ਗਏ। ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਬਜਾਰ 'ਚ ਦੁਕਾਨ ਸੀ, ਹੁਣ ਐਥੇ ਆ ਗਏ। ਬਾਕੀਆਂ ਨੇਂ ਕੰਮ ਬਦਲ ਲਏ। ਪਰ ਮੈਂ ਨ੍ਹੀਂ ਬਦਲਿਆ ।
ਦਿਹਾੜੀ ਚ ਇੱਕ ਦੋ ਹੁੱਕੇ ਹੀ ਬਣਦੇ ਆ| ਅੰਦਰ ਬਾਂਸ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਸਾਰਾ, ਬਾਂਸ ਹਿਮਾਚਲ ਚੋਂ ਆਉਂਦੈ। ਉੱਪਰ ਐਲੂਮੀਨੀਅਮ ਦੀ ਤਾਰ ਲੱਗਦੀ ਹੈ। ਤਿੰਨ ਤੈਹਾਂ ਲਗਦੀਆਂ ਇਸਦੀਆਂ, ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਹਲਕੀ ਜਿਹੀ ਲਗਦੀ ਹੈ, ਫੇਰ ਰੰਗਦਾਰ ਤਹਿ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਉੱਪਰ ਆਖਰੀ ਤਹਿ। ਇਹ ਨਾਲ਼ੀ ਬਣਾਉਣ ਦਾ ਅੱਡ ਤਰੀਕਾ ਹੈ, ਬਾਂਸ ਸਿੱਧਾ ਆਉਂਦਾ, ਇਹਦੇ 'ਚ ਰੇਤ ਭਰਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ। ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਕੱਟ ਲਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਾਂ, ਸੁਰਾਖ ਕਰਦੇ ਆਂ, ਗੱਠਾਂ ਭਰ ਕੇ ਉਹਦੇ 'ਚ ਰੇਤਾ ਭਰ ਕੇ ਅੱਗ ਤੋਂ ਮੋੜਦੇ ਆਂ। ਹਲਕਾ ਹਲਕਾ ਸੇਕ ਦੇ ਕੇ ਹੱਥ ਨਾਲ ਮੋੜੀਦੀ ਆ ਫੇਰ ਅੱਧਾ ਮਿੰਟ ਪਾਣੀਂ 'ਚ ਭਿਓਂ ਕੇ ਰਖਦੇ ਹਾਂ
ਇਕ ਹੁੱਕਾ 300 ਤੋਂ 450 ਰੁਪਈਏ ਦਾ ਵਿਕ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ| ਜਿੰਨੀ ਜਿਆਦਾ ਤਾਰ ਲੱਗੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਉਨਾਂ ਹੀ ਜਿਆਦਾ ਰੇਟ ਹੁੰਦੈ| ਹੁਸ਼ਿਆਰਪੁਰ, ਨਕੋਦਰ, ਨੂਰ ਮਹਿਲ, ਹਿਮਾਚਲ ਤੱਕ ਚਲਦਾ ਸੀ। ਹੁਣ ਲਾਗਤ ਈ ਹੈਨੀਂ, ਹੁਣ ਲੋਕ ਜ਼ਰਦਾ ਖਾਣ ਲੱਗ ਪਏ। ਨਸ਼ੇ ਖਾਣ ਲੱਗ ਪਏ। ਹੁੱਕਾ ਪੀਣਾਂ ਛੱਡ ਗਏ। ਇਹ ਤਾਂ ਪਾਣੀ 'ਚ ਛਣ ਕੇ ਆਉਂਦੈ, ਠੰਡਾ ਹੋ ਕੇ, ਇਹਦਾ ਏਨਾ ਨੁਕਸਾਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ। ਤੀਵੀਂਆਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਪੀਂਦੀਆਂ ਸੀ। ਗੈਸ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਣਦਾ।
Sales have dropped from the last 15-20 years. We also sell tobacco – one and a half kg for 60 rupees. I have smoked it a lot in the past. After the arrival of LPG cylinders in homes, no body uses coal anymore. That’s the reason I stopped smoking hookah. Earlier, people used dungcakes and firewood for cooking, which could later be used for hookah. It had been popular in Punjab and Haryana. It is still used in Haryana. If there is an order, we fulfill it. I had eight more artisans working with me. Now there is none.
I am 92 years old now. I have kept away from drugs. I have never been ill. It is all grace of Allah. I did not indulge in any extravagances; I have lived on plain bread and butter. I had 6 daughters and 4 sons. All are married and have their own children. I have done the same work all my life. My father did the same work too. During ’47, I used to keep a vigil to be safe from attacks too. There were no riots in Malerkotla. I was 15 years old. I used to help in rehabilitation by bringing medicines and aid for the riot victims who arrived from elsewhere. They would leave for Pakistan after a couple of weeks.
ਪੜ੍ਹੇ ਹੈਨੀ, ਗੁੱਲੀ ਡੰਡਾ ਖੇਡਦੇ ਰਹੇ। ਪੜ੍ਹਾਈ ਦਾ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਹੈ ਨਈਂ ਸੀ। ਮਾਂ ਪਿਉ ਨੂੰ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਕੰਮ ਸਿਖਾਈਏ, ਬੱਚਾ 2-3 ਆਨੇ ਕਮਾਉਣ ਜੋਗਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਵੇ। ਪੜ੍ਹਾਈ ਦਾ ਹੁਣ ਈ ਸ਼ੌਂਕ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ। ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਤਾਂ ਬੱਸ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦੇ ਸੀ। ਸਸਤਾ ਜਮਾਨਾਂ ਸੀ। 2-4 ਆਨੇਂ ਬਣਾ ਲਈਦੇ ਸੀ। ਉਨੇਂ ਦਾ ਸੌਦਾ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਸੀ। ਉਦੋਂ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਚ ਲਗਭਗ ਹਰ ਦੁਕਾਨ ਤੇ ਹੁੱਕਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਸੀ। ਇਹਨੂੰ ਤਿਆਰ ਕਰਨ ਨੂੰ ਪੰਦਰਾਂ ਵੀਹ ਮਿੰਟ ਲੱਗ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਆ। ਇਕ ਹੁੱਕਾ ਤਾਜਾ ਕਰਕੇ, ਤੰਬਾਕੂ ਪਾ ਕੇ ਚਾਰ ਪੰਜ ਬੰਦੇ ਪੀ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਸੀ। ਹਰ ਪ੍ਰੋਗਰਾਮ ਤੇ ਇਹਨੂੰ ਵਿਚਾਲੇ ਰੱਖ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਅਤੇ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਬਾਤਾਂ ਕਰੀ ਜਾਂਦੇ। ਇਹ ਇਕ ਸਾਂਝੀ ਪੰਚਾਇਤੀ ਚੀਜ ਹੈ।
